Chelsea is served by a volunteer fire department as well as a police service provided by the Marengo County Sheriff’s Department, with local backup police service provided by the Demopolis Police Dept. The current police chief is Josh Tatum.
Chelsea has three public schools: Chelsea High School (grades 9-12), Chelsea Middle School (grades 6-8), and Chelsea Elementary School (grades K-5). Chelsea High School’s mascot is the Wildcat, while Chelsea Middle School’s mascot is the Colt, and Chelsea Elementary School’s mascot is the Bulldog. Each school has an Alabama Department of Education rating of “C” or better.
Chelsea High School’s colors are blue and gray; while Chelsea Middle School’s colors are red, white, and black; and Chelsea Elementary School’s colors are yellow and black.
Chelsea High football games and other high school sports events are held at Wildcat Stadium, which features bleacher seating for over 3,000 people as well as a state-of-the-art press box. Chelsea Middle School also hosts varsity level sporting events such as football and track & field at Wildcat Stadium.

Located near Chelsea is the County Line Wildlife Management Area, a State-owned property that provides a habitat for various wildlife species including deer, wild turkey, and dove. The Demopolis Regional Airport is located just outside of Chelsea’s city limits to the north and offers an airport open to the public with 24-hour service provided by two FBOs. Also nearby is the unincorporated town of Mayhew, located in western Marengo County approximately 10 miles to the north.
