About Rickwood Field, Birmingham
Rickwood Field is the United States’ oldest professional baseball park. It was built in 1910 by industrialist Rick Woodward and has served as the home park for the Birmingham Barons and the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro leagues. The field is 12.7 acres in size, has been preserved, and is undergoing gradual restoration to become a “working museum” where baseball’s history can be experienced. It should be of note that Rickwood Field is a site listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Friends of Rickwood have been caring for the ballpark since 1992, and are working to restore it to its former splendor. From local minor-league stars to Negro League greats and Major League Baseball icons, the venue has seen numerous luminaries of the game circle in its bases. Rickwood Field is the home to the Miles College baseball team and the Barons also play one regular-season classic game a year there.
In addition, a museum to house the Negro and Southern League’s Hall of Fame has been proposed for a site next door to the park.
Rickwood Field is a place that allows visitors to relive the magic of baseball’s glory era.
