Birmingham Zoo

Birmingham, the largest city in Alabama is home to the Birmingham Zoo. The zoo is a feature of Lane Park which is also home to botanical gardens and some other pieces of Birmingham’s history. It is also of note that the zoo has the lowest entry fee in the state.

 

About the Zoo

 

Birmingham Zoo, formerly known as the Jimmy Morgan Zoo, is a zoological park that was established in 1955. The zoo is about 122 acres in size and is a not for profit, independent organization.

 

The zoo is home to approximately 550 animals representing over 195 different species and receives approximately 450,000 visitors per year. It should be noted that the zoo is Alabama’s only Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited zoo and is a member of a special species survival plan.

 

The zoo is home to a wide variety of animals, including sea lions, zebras, rhinos, elephants, and other endangered species from six continents.

 

The zoo has 3 sections for exhibits, They are;

 

Main Zoo: Consists of the alligator swamp, bird aviaries, flamingo lagoon, predator building, primate building, reptile building, sea lions and tortoise yard.

 

Junior League of Birmingham-Hugh Kaul Children’s Zoo: Exhibits devoted to urban, rural, and wild animals in Alabama’s environs. The exhibits in this section include barn animals, butterflies, fishes, cranes, bears, and wild turkeys. All the animals in this section are native to Alabama.

 

Trials of Africa: An expansion that designates the zoo as a national leader in the care and conservation of threatened elephants. It also features a giraffe yard, a rhino building, a waterhole exhibit, and a savannah hoofstock yard that exhibits plain zebras and ostriches.

 

The zoo also has a permanent komodo dragon exhibit.
