Arlington Antebellum Home and Gardens

Downtown Birmingham, Alabama is well-known for its historic and cultural roots, and the Arlington Antebellum House and Gardens is a highlight. Let’s have a look!

About the Place

Arlington Historic House, Mudd-Munger House, and The Grove are all names given to the Arlington Antebellum House and Gardens. The property consists of a two-story former plantation house with 6 acres of landscaped gardens. It is a historical, cultural, and civic center with antebellum-era Greek Revival architecture.

The Arlington House, Birmingham’s oldest structure, was built by Judge William S. Mudd, one of the city’s ten founders. Arlington can be called a decorative arts museum. It houses a collection of 19th-century furniture, textiles, silverware, and paintings. It should be noted that the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

Features of the Facility

The Arlington house has a few features that make it an historic place. They include;

The Mudd Room: It is the first room that tourists encounter and is named after the house’s first owner. It has deep historical significance for Alabama and the course of the Civil War.

The Historic Southeast bedroom: This room has a lot of interesting features. The Lincoln chair, which closely resembles the chair in which President Abraham Lincoln was fatally shot, an empire chest donated from the home of actress Katherine Hepburn, and first generation antebellum toilets are among them.

Mother of pearl tilt-top tables that can be found throughout the facility. They are beautiful portable tables that have functional and literally face-saving purposes. It is said that the table tops could be folded up to block the heat emitted by the fireplaces, which could melt women’s wax makeup.

The New Orleans French bed with no screws: The only thing that keeps it together is pure craftsmanship. Every piece of the bed fits perfectly into the connecting one, and removing would cause the bed to fall apart.

 Activities

Arlington is now open to the public for those curious about Birmingham’s history. The facility offers tours and can also host weddings, breakfasts, luncheons, dinners, and other events. Special events are held in Arlington. Mother’s Day Brunch, Thursday luncheons during the summer, Halloween masquerade dinners, and Christmas Open House are among them.

The Arlington house is situated at 331 Cotton Ave SW, Birmingham, AL 35211, United States. Unless there is a special event, opening hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday. For more information about Arlington Antebellum Home and Gardens visit their site.
