Alabama is also home to one of the most historic Radio societies, The Alabama Historical Radio Society also known as AHRS.
About Alabama Historical Radio Society
Alabama Historical Radio Society (AHRS) is a non-profit organization that was founded by a Birmingham resident called Don Kresge in the year 1989. He formed the society as an avenue for people of all age groups to converge and follow their interests in Vintage Broadcast Radio, Vintage Radio equipment, and Broadcasting tools. This society is open to any and every person who loves and enjoys listening to old Radio broadcasts, and generally loves listening to music or people interested in repairing and featuring old radios.
This radio Society also maintains a museum comprising of different historic Radio equipment and memorabilia, this museum is recognized by the name ” Don Kresge Memorial Radio Museum where visitors may see and listen to radios manufactured over fifty years ago, and it is situated at the Alabama Power Building at 600 18th Street North in the downtown area of Birmingham. In this Museum visitors can view restored vintage radios and radio-related equipment.
The Alabama Historical Radio Society (AHRS) provides several opportunities to its members and the general public, including special shop days on Saturday and Tuesday morning where people can gather to discuss, work on projects, share knowledge on radio related topics, research answers to radio related questions, read and learn about the history of different radio models or learn about the parts of radio and things needed in radio restoration (types of equipment, parts, tools, mechanism)
Activities
The Alabama Historical Radio Society arranges annual meetings which provide opportunities for acquiring or disposing of equipment or other memorabilia, also, formal classes are conducted on electronic restoration and cabinet refinishing for members interested in acquiring these skills. Also Programs for local businesses and civic groups to create awareness and create interest in understanding and knowing the relevance of entertainment history.
The Radio Society (AHRS) is easily accessible and provides free parking space for all visitors and members in the Alabama Power Visitors Lot.
